A collection of over 100 photographs dating from around 1910 to 1940 that once belonged to a Litvak family from Kaunas who smuggled them out of the Kaunas Ghetto during the final months of the Holocaust in Lithuania. The images were rediscovered in 2013 by the Creative Director of the International Centre for Litvak Photography and with the help of a social media campaign the family was identified by Saul? Vali?nait?, a young researcher based in Vilnius. The photographs revealed many fascinating facts, including a strong musical connection with the family, something that inspired us to commission The Kaunas Requiem. The vast majority of the men, women and children featured in these photographs were murdered between 1941 and 1944.
