The   Spiegels

Krakow, 1936. Dr. Markus Spiegel, his wife Rachel ( nee Lampel), Daughter Ora and son Lotek (now Prof. Elazar Shafrir).

Eleazar Shafrir (Spiegel)

was born in Krakow, Poland, in 1924.

Shafrir, who was born in Krakow, was orphaned after the German occupation of Poland, when his parents and sister were murdered.  He managed to escape with a friend from the Plaszow concentration camp with the help of Christian former housekeeper of his friendsÕ family; Andzia Kaczorowska, others; Andzia Mikuszewska-Madej and Mania Płatek and with false papers and guide provided by Andzia Kaczorowska  he reached Hungary. With the assistance of Jewish Agency representatives in the city, he received a visa to immigrate to the Land of Israel, via Istanbul.

 

Shortly after his arrival, Shafrir began his chemistry studies at the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus.  Following the United Nations vote on partition, he, along with other students, enlisted to take part in the defense of Gush Etzion and during the War of Independence fought in many battles in the Jerusalem precinct.

 

After the end of the war, Shafrir completed his studies and earned a doctorate.  He joined the medical school at Hadassah and was appointed professor.  Shafrir, who founded the center for diabetes research in the faculty of medicine, participated in numerous scientific conferences in Israel and abroad and gained international recognition in his field of expertise.

Dr. Spiegel Mordekhai  

Dr. Mordekhai Spiegel was born in Jaroslaw in 1886 to Zeev and Dvora. He was a lawyer. Prior to WWII he lived in Krakow, Poland. During the war he was in Krakow, Poland.Dr. Spiegel perished in 1940 in Auschwitz, Camp at the age of 54. Spiegel Roza  

Roza Spiegel nee Lampel was born in Cieszanow in 1897 to Avraham and Khana. She was a nurse. Prior to WWII she lived in Krakow, Poland. During the war she was in Krakow, Ghetto. Roza perished in 1942 in Belzec, Poland at the age of 45. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by her son

 

Spiegel Ora  

Ora Spiegel was born in Krakow in 1930 to Markus and Roza. She was a pupil and a child. Prior to WWII she lived in Krakow, Poland. During the war she was in Krakow, Ghetto. Ora perished in 1943 in Krakow, Ghetto at the age of 13. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by her brother, a Shoah survivor

Mrs. Zeberko  

Mrs. Zeberko was born in Krakow in 1898. She was a nanny and divorced. Prior to WWII she lived in Krakow, Poland. During the war she was in Krakow, Ghetto. She perished in 1943 in Krakow, Ghetto at the age of 45. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by her family friend, a Shoah survivor

Zahn Lea  

Lea Zahn nee Lampel was born in Lubaczow in 1890 to Avraham and Khana. She was married to Leib. Prior to WWII she lived in Belz, Poland. During the war she was in Belz, Poland. Lea perished in the Shoah at the age of 53. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by her nephew

 

Zahn Leib  

Leib Zahn was born in Belz. He was a flourmill owner and married to Lea nee Lempel. Prior to WWII he lived in Belz, Poland. During the war he was in Belz, Poland. Leib perished in the Shoah at the age of 60. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by his wifeÕ nephew, a Shoah survivor.

Zahn Khana  

Khana Zahn was born in Belz in 1922 to Leib and Lea. She was single. Prior to WWII she lived in Belz, Poland. During the war she was in Belz, Poland. Khana perished in 1942 in Belz, Poland at the age of 21. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by her cousin.

Zahn Frania  

Frania Zahn was born in Belz in 1920 to Leib and Lea. Prior to WWII she lived in Belz, Poland. During the war she was in Belz, Poland. Frania perished in 1943 in Lwow, Poland at the age of 23. Zahn Getzel  

Getzel Zahn was born in Belz in 1923 to Leib and Lea. Prior to WWII he lived in Belz, Poland. During the war he was in Belz, Poland. Getzel perished in the Shoah at the age of 21. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by his cousin.

 

Borg Miriam  

Miriam Borg nee Fallinower was born in Warsza. She was a housewife and married to Moshe. Prior to WWII she lived in Warsza, Poland. During the war she was in Warszawa, Ghetto. Miriam perished in Treblinka, Poland. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by her husband's cousin.

eberko Yerzy  

Yerzy Zeberko was born in Krakow in 1926. He was a pupil. During the war he was in Krakow, Ghetto. Yerzy perished in 1942 in Belzec, Poland at the age of 16. This information is based on a Page of Testimony (displayed on left) submitted on 10-Apr-1999 by his friend.  More Details...
