The Wainer Family of Horodok
Gutel-Gordon and Hinda Wainer had 4 daughters and one son. The only son; Yudel, came to America with his sister Rivka. Nechama, Shifra and ? stayed in the Russian empire. The parents came to America and did not like it and returned to Horodok. Nechama married Zalman Shepsenvol and had about seven children and they all lived in Horodok. Shifra married Ytzhak Shpringer who came from the southern part of Poland. They had 8 children and they all lived in Horodok which was between 1921- 1939 part of Poland . The third sister lived in Minsk which became part of the Soviet Union after 1920. There was no contact with the family in the Soviet Union. The sister married a Zedlin and had children in Minsk. The last time that the American side heard from any of the family who lived in Europe was 1941. Today ( 1- 29- 06) the sole survivor of the family from Horodok; Shepsel Shpringer, the son of Shifra nee Wainer and Ytzhak, talked for the first time with the grandaughter of his mothers' brother; Bonnie Pollack who lives in the U.S.
Bonnie and her cousin Phyllis looked for information about the family in Europe for a long time; They only knew that a sister was married to "a Springer" and that the names of their great grandparents were Gordon and Hinda Wainer. One day Phyllis found Yad Vashem reports about Ytzhak Shpringer who was married to Shifra nee Wainer, daughter of Hinda and Gutel. She felt that it was the right family. When Bonnie found out about it she got in touch with someone in Israel and he must of "googled" the names and found the Horodok site which named Shepsel Shpringer in a few places as a partisan. Bonnie got in touch with me and I found Shepsel in Petach Tikva by calling his friends from Horodok- The partisans- and later Israel; Isaac Noll and Yaakov Eidelman.
I called Shepsel first and told him that he might have relatives in America. To my great surprise he said " My mother had a brother; Yehuda Wainer and a sister in America. My mother would tell me that they had "huge families" they sent us many letters before the war- but I was never able to find them after the war" He told me that he did find a cousin ( the son of his mother' sister Zeidlin) who survived the war in Minsk. Now he is in touch with his children in Minsk.
Shepsel said that both families of the sisters in Horodok had ranches ( Horses and cows). Both families survived the liquidation of ghetto Horodok in the summer of 1942 and were in the work camp in Krasne. He and two of his brothers ( Yaakov who was born in 1915 and Henek born in 1922) escaped and joined the partisans. The rest of the family perished in the spring of 1943 when the Krasne camp was liquidated. Yaakov was killed while fighting. Henek and Shepsel survived the war and when the area of Minsk was liberated by the Soviets in the summer of 1944 they joined the Red Army to fight germany all the way to berlin. henek was killed at the end of 1944. Shepsel was the only survivor from the entire family in Horodok. He married Rivka and had a son Ytzhak and a daughter. The family came to Israel via Poland. Shepsel has 7 grandchildren and a few great grandchildren.

The Winner/Wiener Family In America
My grandfather initially came to the US with his sister Rebecca. I called her Tante Becca and I really do not know what her real name was in Russia. My grandfather was the only son of a family of girls (4). He worked on the railroad and ended up in St. Albans, Vermont near the Canadian border. As a child I spent every summer with him and my grandmother (Gelka Nevitsky (changed to Brown) Winner. They settled in a small booming railroad town, raised a family of 11, built a small synagogue made up of mostly relatives. My cousins owned local businesses, some extremely successful. During the Depression my grandparents literally fed the town from their grocery store. My grandfather, Julius Max (Judel Mendel) was affectionally known as the "good Christian" dispite the fact he was an orthodox Jew ;-) Both were kind, gentle people and so very opposite. He was worldly and well educated, she was illiterate and homey.
