#rdmn-1a: Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchak Ruderman (1901-1987) a prominent Talmudic scholar and Rabbi who founded and served as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Ner Israel in Baltimore |
|
#rdmn-1:Rabbis of
the New WorldR' Yaakov Yitzchak Halevi Ruderman z"l was born on Shushan
Purim in 5601/1901 in Dolhinov, Russia, where his father, R' Yehuda Laib,
was the rabbi. He studied in Yeshivat Knesset Yisrael in Slobodka, then
headed by R' Nosson Zvi Finkel (the "Alter") and R' Moshe Mordechai
Epstein z"l. (Slobodka produced more future leaders of American Torah
Jewry than any European yeshiva. Among R' Ruderman's colleagues in Slobodka
were R' Reuven Grozovsky; R' Ruderman's first cousin, R' Yaakov Kaminetsky;
R' Aharon Kotler; R' Yitzchak Hutner; R' Yaakov Moshe Lessin, and others.)
R' Ruderman received semichah/ordination from R' Epstein in 1926. At approximately
the same time, R' Ruderman published his only written work, Avodat Halevi.
In 1930, R' Ruderman joined his father-in-law, R' Sheftel Kramer, at the
latter's yeshiva in Cleveland. (R' Kramer previously had taught at the yeshiva
of R' Levenburg in New Haven, Connecticut, the first yeshiva in the United
States outside of New York.) In 1933, R' Ruderman moved to Baltimore and
founded the Ner Israel yeshiva. R' Ruderman led that yeshiva for 54 years
until his passing and built it into one of the largest yeshivot in America,
producing numerous rabbis, educators and learned laymen. Outside of his
own yeshiva, R' Ruderman was involved in many aspects of Jewish communal
life. His death on 14 Tamuz 5747/July 11, 1987 followed less than one-and-a-half
years after the passing of R' Kaminetzky and R' Moshe Feinstein (both of
whom died just before Purim of 1986). With the passing of these three giants
of the Lithuanian yeshiva world, many considered an era to have ended in
American Jewish history. Posthumously, R' Ruderman's students have published
two volumes of his teachings: Sichot Levi contains mussar/ethical insights
based on the weekly parashah, while Mas'at Levi contains lectures on the
19th century work Minchat Chinuch and other Tamudic and halachic insights.

David B. Ruderman (Ph.D., Hebrew University, Jerusalem, 1975) is Joseph
Meyerhoff Professor of Modern Jewish History and Director of the Center
for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Previously,
he taught at Yale University and the University of Maryland, where he was
instrumental in establishing both institutions†Judaic
Studies programs. At Maryland, he won the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher
Award in l982-83. He received the JWB National Book Award in Jewish History
in l982 for The World of a Renaissance Jew: The Life and Thought of Abraham
B. Mordecai Farissol, and the 2001 Koret Book Award in Jewish History for
Jewish Enlightenment in an English Key: Anglo-Jewryâ€s
Construction of Modern Jewish Thought. Professor Ruderman is president of
the American Academy for Jewish Research, and has been honored with a lifetime
achievement award by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture.
My late Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman, zt"l, of Ner
Israel, used Parshas Va'eira to demonstrate the importance of gratitude.Hashem
tells Moshe that he should speak to Aaron and tell him to take his staff
and strike the Nile River. Moshe wasn't commanded to do the job himself,
Rashi explains, "because the Nile protected Moshe when he was cast
into the river; it was not to be smitten by his hand--not in the plague
of blood and not in the plague of frogs."This notion also held true
for the plague of lice. Moshe was not to strike the earth to bring on the
plague because that very earth had saved him when he used it to bury the
Egyptian taskmaster whom he had killed. In this manner, the Torah is teaching
us how deeply we must feel gratitude, not only to human beings who help
us but even to inanimate objects such as water and sand. The Rosh Yeshiva
quoted a case from the Shita Mekubetzes. A wealthy man lost his fortune
and needed to sell his bathhouse to satisfy creditors. The famous rabbi,
the Rif, lived in that city and was asked to assess its value, but declined
to do so because he had personally benefited from the use of the bathhouse. To
this the Shita Mekubetzes writes: "If this internal feeling of gratitude
by the Rif applied to an inanimate bathhouse, how much more so should a
person be sensitive to the feelings of a human being."IIn Bemidbar,
Moshe is commanded to take vengeance on the nation of Midyan, and while
he did not hesitate to go into battle, he nonetheless did not lead the troops
himself. Because he had lived in Midyan many years earlier and felt gratitude
toward his former homeland, it would not be proper for him to personally
fight this battle.Rashi, at the beginning of the Chumash, tells us that
the world was created for something called reishis. Bikurim, the first fruits
of the harvest, are called reishis, and we can thus learn that the world
was created so that one could bring these first fruits, which show appreciation
for the bounty of the Almighty. One who displays the trait of gratitude
fulfills the purpose of creation. One who shows ingratitude, on the other
hand, is described by the Talmud as "an ingrate, son of an ingrate."
This appellation was applied to the Jews who complained to Moshe in the
Sinai Desert. They had, it seems, inherited their lack of appreciation for
Hashem's favors from the first human, Adam, who, when asked why he ate the
fruit of the tree of knowledge, told G-d, "The woman you placed beside
me caused me to eat." Adam, in a sense, blamed Hashem for his own failings.Throughout
History, man is confronted with the opportunity to show his gratitude or
to deny his debt to another.Rabbi Ruderman related that once a certain bochur
came to the Chofetz Chaim's yeshiva in Radin, the Chofetz Chaim personally
arranged proper accommodations for the young boy. He explained that many
years before, this boy's grandfather had been kind to him in Vilna and thus
he showed the grandson his appreciation. In our generation, much of the strife
that is found can be traced to a failing in displaying gratitude, especially
toward spouses and other family members. One who develops this trait of
gratitude is a much happier person and certainly sees more satisfaction
in his interpersonal relationships.Rabbi Leonard Oberstein
Rabbi Oberstein is rabbi of Randallstown Synagogue Center, Randallstown,
MD. He wishes to express his gratitude to Avrohom Askowitz who compiled
Rabbi Ruderman's lectures in the sefer, Sichos Levi. |

#rdmn-9:...Filmmaker
Arkady Ruderman produced films on Jewish topics, and investigated army
corruption. Ruderman was killed in Tajikstan in 1992-before Lukashenko
came to power-while working on a documentary about the Russian Army's
support of the Tajik communist regime. Chulanov produced programs on corruption
among Red Army personnel stationed in Germany until 1991. Chulanov "knew
too much about the army before the collapse of the Soviet Union,"
Nikiforovich says. Petrusha, who worked with Chulanov, produced a show
about a Jewish correspondent for Moscow TV whom Lukashenko expelled from
the country.
Both men were murdered in the spring of 1995. "Alexander's wife and
son were on vacation, and he was alone in his apartment when the killers
came," Nikiforovich says. Petrusha's elderly mother returned from
the family's dacha to find her son's body. Nikiforovich learned of the
killings a short while later, when an ex-colleague from Belarusan TV broke
the news. In the fall, when friends of the slain men tried to investigate,
they were called in to KGB offices. "It is our deal, not yours,"
the KGB agents reportedly said. "I'm sure that it is their work,"
Nikiforovich says....

Thanks for those of you who have responded to my email. I should have
been
more specific...Moshe (Morris) RUDERMAN was MY grandfather. I have
been
unable to find him in any passenger records for immigration. His 1910
census
from Mamakating, Sullivan Cty states he immigrated in 1900. I DO have
proof
of his marriage to Sarah(Eske) Cohen in August, 1903. She immigrated
in 1898
along with her brother Jack(Jacob) COHEN, whose family I am also having
difficulty finding as they did not remain in touch over the decades. I
have
written to Sullivan Cty for naturatization proof, supposedly 1916 for
Morris & Sarah.
I have not located any SS information on Morris ( I believe that Sarah
would
not have had her own).
I am trying to obtain a picture of Ester Ruderman Kasdin Josephs'
gravestone in
Rochester. She came over as Ester KASDEN along with her son, Jankel.
Does anyone know what the numbers mean next to Jankel KASDEN's name?:
7-186276-12-15-41-505.
It is on Ester KASDEN'S immigration record in 1912 that the village
name
Kreist appears. I believe that the last letter is T not K because it
is
like a script T. Any ideas on where this place was? I doesn't appear
on
the list of Disappearing Villages or Villages that merged together.
Again, thanks in advance for any help.
Sincerely,
Liz Ruderman Miller

Notes by Liz Ruderman Miller ;
Does anyone know how I could find someone to check the cemetery in
Kraisk/Kraysk,Belarus for a tombstone? ( also some pictures of Kraisk)
Kraisk is about 9 miles from Dolgovino.
I am hoping to find anyone in my Ruderman family who lived in Kraisk
until
about 1915.
My great grandfather was Itzsack Ruderman, married to Ruchel (Rachel)
Jacobs or
Axelrod or Areclad. The children who immigrated where born between
1875-1885.
My grandfather was Moshe Ruderman, born @ 1878. Other siblings were
Ester (who married Joseph KASDEN before immigrating in 1912), Sophie
(who married Louis CHEFEITZ before immigrating @1911), Abraham, Harry.
all born approx. 1878 - 1898. all immigrated to U.S.
I have no additional pictures or information on previous generations
for either.
I would be very grateful if someone has Ruchel Axelrad or Itzchack in
their tree. I beieve they may be buried in the cemetery near
KRAISK/KRAYSK.
Sadly, NARA has no immigration records for my grandparents, Moshe
(Morris) RUDERMAN (RUDORMAN) 1900 and Eske (Sarah) COHEN
(KOHEN,KAGEN)1898. I know that they were
married in August, 1903 in New York City. My ggrandmother's surname
is listed on LDS marriage record (of Morris &
Sarah Cohen Ruderman ) as Rachel ARELCAD. On all other records, she is
called
Rachel Jacobs. I know that she and her husband, Itzchack Ruderman
lived in
Kraisk/Kraysk. I can not find Jacobs or Arelcad in Kraisk/Kraysk. I
also tried
Dolgovino - no luck. Does anyone have any ideas on what this means?
Itzchack Ruderman served in the Russian Army before immigrating to
US in
1900. He would have been about 20 in 1900. I wrote to RGVIA quite
some
time ago and have had no response. My family always said Itzchack had
been
in the military. Is there any other way I can find any Russian
military information
(@ 1898- 1900, I assume.)Itzchack Ruderman lived in Kraisk/Kraysk
before
immigrating.
Does anyone have any other ideas regarding how I can confirm their
immigration? I believe that they, or at least the RUDERMAN family
came from Kraisk
I would be extremely grateful for any help.
I have found the Declaration of Intention for Naturalization for my
great-grandfather, Morris Ruderman dated February 8, 1916. It states
that
"I emigrated to the United States of America from Kovno Russia on the
vessel Bulgaria....I arrived at the port of New York on or about the 20
day of April, 1900."
I have been unable to find any ships records or immigration records
around
that date for Moshe or Morris Ruderman. There are two ships with
similar
names, the Belgravia and the Bulgaria. Is it possible that my
grandfather
departed from Kovno (Kaunus) but sailed from one of the main Port of
Departure
for New York?
A few of the ships manifest records for my RUDERMAN family indicated
that they
came to a relative living at 39 Jackson Street, New York City, NY.
Is there a way of finding that address between 1904-1910 and who lived
there?
|
I am looking for information on Jacob COHEN, who immigrated with his
sister,
Eske (Sarah) in 1898. In the 1910 New York Census, Jacob was living
in Haven, New
York on a farm along with his sister, Sarah Cohen RUDERMAN, her
husband, Morris
Ruderman and their children, Rachel, Ceil and my dad, Henry. Members
of my family
said he went by Jack Cohen, but do not know where he was living.
Jacob and Sarah (who lived in Port Jervis, NY until her death from
cancer in 1948)
had a sister, Eleanor Cohen who never married, lived in the Brighton
Beach area of
Brooklyn, and was struck down while trying to cross the street sometime
in the
early 1960s

MY FAMILY ALSO CAME FROM MINSK. HE SPELLED HIS LAST NAME RUDDERMAN. I WAS
ALWAYS TOLD THE SPELLING MIGHT HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT. PHILIP RUDDERMAN ALSO
CAME TO THE U.S.A. IN 1895. COULD THIS BE THE SAME FAMILY? Sara Hamm sarahamm@bellsouth.net
------
My Ruderman ancestors came to the Malden
Massachusetts area from Russia (Minsk)
around 1895. Before Minsk they seem to
have lived in Lithuania. I would like to
learn more information about this period
of the family history. Robert Ruderman.
We came to America from Minsk in 1989. We now live in Chicago land area.
We are not aware of any relatives living in US, but considering how big
our family used to be, anything is possible.
Michael Ruderman. app4mike@yahoo.com------
We also live in the Chicago area. My great grandfather Barnett was born
in Radaschovichi (sp) in the 1870's and came to this country in the 1890's.
There are a lot of different rumors about four brothers, who came here about
that time, but there is no verification. How big was the Ruderman family
there? Practically everyone I have communicated with traces the Ruderman
family back to this area near Minsk.

You must remember that the manifest was from 1905 and the census are from
1920
the family could have moved at list once in 15 years. The family I found
already moved from Connecticut c 1898(The original place that many from
Kurenitz lived was New Haven) I know that they moved since daughter; Scolnik
Rose 23 in 1920 was born in Connecticut and son; Julius Scolnik 22 born
in Connecticut but son; Scolnik John 21 born in New York. In 1920 they
lived on Clay Street (Bronx borough Assembly District 2.;Tract 177 (part
of) Bounded by: E. 170th, Clay Ave., E. 169th, Findlay Ave.) but all their
kids other then Rose had good jobs and they might have needed a bigger
home since they were seven adults living at the house. In 1930 they moved
to Loring Place
Why do I know it is the uncle of your grandfather?
1. He is the only J. Scolnik in the 1920 New York census.
2. The last son that is listed with him is Ira Ruderman- Marian wrote
that you had relatives by the name Ruderman ( Re Ruderman... William Leons
mother was a Ruderman Ann/ Channa. She sent him to an uncle/aunt in canada..
MA)
Ruderman is not a common name!
