After services, Eva MankowskaEva Mankowska, a local painter, and I stroll over to the youth center at the Izaak Synagogue, where the American Foundation folks have parachuted in dinner. For whatever reason, and despite the fact that this happens every week, this particular dinner is less festive than usual, and takes longer to make ready. My friends claim that the Americans took over and tried to do everything their way. This leads to some jocularity in our area, especially as one old man, across the table from us, and independent of us (or anyone, as near as I can tell) periodically bursts out that the Americans are ruining the melodies, or that if this were in Israel there'd be turkey.

Picture ul. Jozefa 24; in c1808 the house owner was Samson's firstborn son Herszel the house is on the right with the Old Shul Synagogue in the background.
Dear Eilat Godin Levitan,
thank you very much for your detailed response.
According to your information Roman RAKOWER could have mixed the given names Shimon and Samson.
Pesach, however, could have been Hinda's grandfather.
One of the Samson's sons was named Pesach.
It was not Jewish use to transfer father's given name to the son.
Anyway, the fact that Samson and/or Pesach, respectively, was rabbi is an interesting information.
I remember that my father had told me about rabbinic roots in our family but nobody could localize the rabbi.
Last year I visited Krakow and I found Samson's house in ul. Jozefa 24; in c1808 the house owner was Samson's firstborn son Herszel. Today you find a czajownia (tea shop) in the house.
Enclosed please find a picture of the house on the right with the Old Shul Synagogue in the background.
Pious men once had to reside not too far from the synagogue.
In any case I will study the Krakow 1840 D#42 record of Hinda.
Would you be so kind to tell me the name of the book in which Roman RAKOWER describes his ancestry ?
My FRENKEL ancestry is depicted by Dan HIRSCHBERG on the FRENKEL family page.
http://www.ics.uci.edu/~dan/genealogy/Krakow/Families/Frenkel.html
Please look at the tree rooting from Samson.
Samson's male children adopted four different surnames: GRUNBERG, KLEINBERG, OSTERN and ... FRENKEL.
They were younger brothers to Hinda who was married to Gecel RAKOWER.
According to vital records Leibel FRENKEL (c1777-1826) and his descendants were engaged in money business.
My paternal grandparents are buried on the Slawkow cemetary.
If Hinda RAKOWER (1768-1840) is common ancestor to our families your husband Daniel LEVITAN would be a 5th cousin, 2 generations apart, to me. This is a very distant relation, but it is enjoyable to meet you.
Your webpage is a fine example of family research. It is a work of love.
By the way, on your page you list that your ancestors Szmul HELBERG and Sara RAKOWER were married in Krakow in 1889.
Their Zawiercie-Kromolow marriage record, however, is dated from 1891:
1891 7 M CHELBERG Szmul
1891 7 M RAKOWER Sara
Hope this will be useful for you.
Best regards
Fred FRENKEL

Eilat Gordin Levitan |
Dear Eilat,
enclosed please find a photograph of the tombstone you show on your RAKOWER page.
It is likely that Roman Rakower visited the same locations in Krakow as I did.
It is interesting to observe the change which has happened to the house of the rabbi Getzel Eliakim Rakower (1764-1838) shown on your Rakower page.
According to the ancient Kazimierz map the house #60 of the Rakower family is located in district VIII Kazimierz. Today you find the house ul. Szeroka 10.
Please find a photograph of this location. The Rakower house is the grey colored house on the left - half shaded by the trees.
The house is located very near to the ancient mikve (ul. Szeroka 6), opposite to the Remuh synagogue and not far away from the Old Shul synagogue - the proper residence for a rabbi.
The Rakower house is about 300 yards distant from the house of my ancestor Samson Herszlowicz (c1745-c1810) (Kazimierz house #24, today ul. Jozefa 24). I have already sent you a photograph of this house.
When "my" Samson passed away in c1810 the first grandson of rabbi Getzel Eliakim Rakower was named Josua Samson Rakower (1811-1875, he was great grandfather of Simcha Raz shown on your Rakower page).
Your husband is rooting from Josua Samson's brother Eliasz Rakower. This ancestor was born in the same Rakower house shown on the photograph.
Best regards
Fred Frenkel

I remember
Motek was a friend of my mother, Ruchla ROTENSZTEJN, in Warszawa. My mother emigrated to France in 1938. She died in 1987. We know that Motek survived and came back to Poland after the war. In 1946 he wrote a letter to my mother in France, with the following return address: Warszawa Praga, ul Szeroka 5, Komitet Centr. Zydow w Polsce
Roma Lewinsztejn dla Rakowera.
After that letter, to my knowledge, my mother never heard anymore from him, nor from anybody that she knew before the war in Poland.
