The Greenblatt Family of Ilja
Today ( 11-1- 2008) I spoke with Yaron Greenblatt of Jerusalem and his
sister Orna.
Their father; Yizhak Greenblatt , was born in Ilja in 1923, he now
lives in Jerusalem. The parents of Yizhak were Pesia and Simcha,
Simcha was a tailor.
Pesia had a sister who lived in Leningrad. She was married to a man by
the last name Pozniak and had a son Moshe. 2 years ago Yizhak, with
his oldest daughter Orna, visited Leningrad ( now St. Petersburg). He
was able to recall the address of his first cousin Moshe but names of
Streets have changed in the last 50 years. He decided to Just try to
find it by walking there and was able to do it. They arrived to the
building and rang the apartment. He told the woman that answered thart
he is looking for "a Moshe Pozniak". The woman said "he was my father.
To their surprise they found out from her that some of her cousins
live in Israel ( daughters of the brother of Moshe). They traced the
family and the families are now reunited.
Yizhak had a sister Miryam who was born in 1922, a brother Elkana who
was born c 1929 (and a sister Yafa Sheina? from what Yaron Knows).. In
September of 1939 the Nazis and Soviets split Poland. The Soviets took
control of the area of Ilja. In 1940 Yizhak ( age 17) was sent to
study in the Soviet Union. After June of 1941 he lost all touch with
his family in Ilja that was taken over by the Nazis.
Yizhak worked for the Soviets and at one time became sick. He did not
show up for work and as a punishment was sent to Siberia for hard
labor. He found out
Eventually he was released and settled in Riga. He met a woman there
and married her. They took advantage of the rules that any former
Polish citizen are permitted to go to Polish Territory. They moved to
Poland and there they had their daughter Orna. They later immigrated
to Israel ( in 1960). Yaron was born shortly after. Eventually Yizhak
was able to trace others from Ilya who now lived in Israel (survivors
as Yonah and Bat Sheva Riar and Shraga Solomianski and others who left
Ilya before the war (as Yehoshua Lapidot and Aryeh Kopilovitz) He
found out that mistakenly they put his name with those who perished
since they did not hear from him in all those years...He did keep with
them from then on and was a good friend to them until they passed
away....
From Yad Vashem it seems that there were 2 Greenblat families from
Ilja Kelmans' family and Simcha' family- maybe related? In both
families there is a son Yizhak and daughter Mera/ Miryam. Also there
is the report for Sarah Gitlitz, daughter of Ephraim Yizhak and Henia
