Heritage Tour to Dolhinov and surroundings-2007 "I wish to give some short account about the Heritage Tour to Dolhinov and surrounding places during the week of 24th - 31st of July 2007. The Tour was a very extensive one. It comprised visits to: Minsk, Dolhinov, Iliya, Hachenchitzi, Molodechno, Mir, Nesvizh, Novogrudek, Lida, Grodno, Radun, Miadel, Naroch(Kobilnik), Smorgon, Volozhin. Most of the participants of the tour were Israeli born "sabras" and for them especially the first encounter with the roots of their families had a deep meaning and was very significant and emotional. In Dolhinov we have been met by the children of the Dolhinov High School with Bread and Salt, all dressed in Belarus national costumes and singing the "Haveinu Shalom Aleichem" song in Hebrew. The whole group was very touched with such a warm welcome. As our Guide confessed, she did not see anything like it before. The true feelings of the participants were best expressed at the end of the Tour by Gideon Liberboim in Hebrew, he is living in USA now. I am attaching here his English version to be incorporated in this short account of the Tour. Gideon's words just penetrate deep into the heart and soul. I am also attaching a few pictures from the Tour to be incorporated too. I will not elaborate on the visits to other places. Just some short comments. We made a special trip to Radun to visit the Memorial grave site of the famous great Rabbi "Hafetz Haim". In Novogrudek we visited the new just opened Jewish Museum, which is mainly devoted to the Ghetto and the unknown heroic escape through the dug underground tunnel of some survivors. The newly discovered facts and details are really astonishing. We were upset and very disappointed to find the famous Volozhin Yeshiva Building neglected, abandoned and desolated ( it is in Jewish hands now). As you probably know I am in close contact with the principal of the Dolhinov High School Galina Tupitzina. The school and its pupils are responsible for the maintenance of the Cemetery and the both built Memorial sites. I hope this special arrangement which has educational value and importance will continue in the foreseeable future too. Leon Rubin, rubinlj@netvision.net.il " |
